Nuclear Power Activism
Fortunately for the rest of us, there are those who are not afraid to stand up and be counted for nuclear power activism. We need to thank these activists, and support them; after all it’s our world they’re doing their best to save.
For as long as there has been nuclear power, there have been activists fighting tooth and nail against it. In fact, there are not many topics which provoke such reactions, whether you are for, or against nuclear power. Originally campaigning for nuclear disarmament, the attentions of the activists was soon turned towards nuclear power plants in general.
The anti nuclear movement has support from many agencies around the world, you’ve probably heard of most of them – Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War are all part of this worldwide campaign to halt the progress of nuclear power and, effectively, help to save the world.
Anti Nuclear Power Demonstrations
There have been some remarkable turn-outs at demonstrations around the world in protest of nuclear power and nuclear power plants. 200,000 people attended a massive rally in Spain in 1977, and that was before the alarming wake up calls of Three Mile Island and the catastrophe in 1986 which happened in Chernobyl. In the aftermath of Chernobyl, fortunately, nuclear power was firmly off the agenda for many governments and agencies, but it appears to have once again reared its ugly head, under the guise of being ‘environmentally friendly’. Fortunately, as quick as the pro nuclear power lobbyists have appeared, so have the activists to try and raise awareness of the dangers and stop the licensing of any more nuclear power plants.
Let’s stop kidding ourselves shall we? Nuclear power is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, do not be deceived, it is an accident waiting to happen – in fact it has happened, several times, and guess what, nothing much has changed to stop it from happening again – only next time it could be worse, it could be in your neighborhood and it could affect millions of lives, including yours.
