Stop Nuclear Energy Power Plants
There are plenty of reasons why we should stop nuclear energy power plants. Five are listed below, and they’re just for starters.
In the interests of humanity and of the whole world, we must stop nuclear energy power plants and look to other sources of renewable energy. Too much time and money has already been invested in nuclear power plants, time and money which would have been better spent researching and building an infrastructure of renewable energy solutions, wind, sun, waves, hydrothermal, there are other options!
Problem number 1 – Cost
Despite it being anticipated that nuclear power energy would be ‘too cheap to meter’ it is important to realize that the reality is a far cry from that assumption. The nuclear energy industry has received tens of billions of dollars worth of subsidies and it has proved to be an extremely expensive option – the liability insurance itself is millions of dollars every year – surely that should tell you something.
Problem number 2 – Safety
Safety really ought to be of paramount importance in such a hazardous industry, but unfortunately there is evidence to suggest that safety has been compromised due to, you’ve guessed it, number 1 – cost. There is, therefore, the very real risk of a catastrophe at a nuclear power plant. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has not used the full extent of its power to minimize that risk, instead choosing to accommodate many of the wishes of the industry itself – bad move.
Problem number 3 – Waste
Nuclear power creates high level and low level radio active waste, even mining and transporting the uranium is a health hazard with a high risk of contamination. Despite years of research, the best scientific brains in the world (well, some of them) still have not come up with a safe and fool proof way to store the waste produced by nuclear energy. Unfortunately, in the mean time, much of this radioactive waste is being stored in temporary containers – that sounds efficient doesn’t it? The bottom line is that no country has found a solution to deal with this waste safely.
Problem number 4 – Security
Remember the devastation caused by the terrorist attacks on 9/11? Remember the devastation caused by Chernobyl in 1986? Well, put those two together and what have you got? Doesn’t bear thinking about does it? The trouble is with nuclear energy power plants, they’re big, they’re stationery and they would make an excellent target for terrorist or military attacks.
Problem number 5 – Proliferation
The technology to produce nuclear energy and the technology to produce nuclear weapons are remarkably similar. I think that’s enough said on that one, don’t you?
So there you have it, five excellent reasons to stop nuclear energy power plants and invest the time, expertise and money into other, renewable sources of energy which aren’t in danger of destroying the entire planet within a radius of hundreds of miles. There are better ways to fulfill the needs of the planet, and it’s about time we started investing in them before it’s too late.
